REMEMBER64.ORG INVITES THE PUBLIC TO JOIN THE “REMEMBER64” MEMORIAL SERVICE
- A candlelight vigil to be held 7:00 to 9:00 PM on May 30, 2009 at the Washington Monument in Washington DC -
Remember64.org, a grassroots organization, has published the event program for the memorial service, to be held on May 30, 2009 in Washington DC. The candlelight vigil will be dedicated to the students and civilians killed twenty years ago in the brutal government crackdown in Beijing, China, during June 3-4, 1989.
A photo exhibit of the (tragic) event will be open for public viewing at 3:00 PM. The vigil will start at 7:00 PM with a one-hour concert. The memorial service starts at 8:00 PM with a children’s chorus and invocation. Fang Zheng, who lost both legs in the Beijing massacre, will speak as special guest. Speakers also include Dr. Wang Dan, a visiting scholar of Oxford University and a former Tiananmen student leader, Dr. Lee Edwards, chairman of the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, and Mr. Tao Ye, a volunteer of the Tiananmen Mother Website. Their speeches will be followed by poetry reading. The names and ages of the known 1989 Massacre victims will be recited one by one, followed by a benediction and music. The event will conclude with the chorus and participants singing together “We Shall Overcome.” Candles meeting national park regulations will be provided. There are also light sticks for children.
We invite everyone to join us for a graceful and peaceful night of remembrance.

Remember64.org was founded in 2008 by a small group of Chinese American professionals, who met and became friends through an internet forum. Together, we have envisioned a memorial service - with a large crowd attending - to remember the innocents who perished in the Beijing Massacre 20 years ago, to refresh memories, and to convey the facts of the tragedy to younger generations.
